Pulmonary Hypertension
Symptoms
If you or a loved one begins to display any of the primary
pulmonary hypertension symptoms, it is important that you consult a doctor
immediately. Other pulmonary hypertension symptoms include: fatigue, chest pain
and anginal chest pain, dizziness and fainting spells. Primary pulmonary
hypertension symptoms often do not lead directly to the underlying diagnosis and
many symptoms can be misleading.

Pulmonary hypertension is a serious problem: it
is likely to cause symptoms, limit physical capabilities, and may cause
disability and shorten life. Pulmonary hypertension is high blood pressure in
the lungs. Disorders of the lungs, heart, liver and collagen vascular system can
cause pulmonary hypertension. In most patients pulmonary hypertension begins
when the blood vessels carrying blood into the lungs constrict, narrowing the
channel for flowing blood. More than ever before, pulmonary hypertension is
treatable.
Primary pulmonary hypertension is a disease of unknown causes. A thorough
evaluation is necessary to evaluate these symptoms and identify the cause if
pulmonary hypertension is discovered. If you have pulmonary hypertension you
should expect that you would need treatment for the rest of your life. Things to
avoid when you have pulmonary hypertension include pregnancy, high altitude,
decongestants, and beta-blockers. Patients with pulmonary hypertension are often
treated with coumadin, calcium channel blockers, intravenous Flolan, and
occasionally lung transplantation.
Treatment of pulmonary hypertension can be complex and is oftentimes
controversial. The good news is that treatment for pulmonary hypertension now is
better than ever. One of the main goals of treatment is to prevent and even
induce regression of the disease. Specific treatment plans are very
individualized, and often require extensive pre-treatment testing. For patients
who do not respond to treatment, lung transplantation may be a consideration.
